Artist:
Ricard Opisso Sala (Tarragona 1882 – Barcelona 1966).
Opisso was a painter, draftsman, and comic artist. In his youth, he took part in Barcelona’s Modernist milieu and, in fact, in 1894 began working as an apprentice to Antoni Gaudí on the construction of the Sagrada Familia. Two years later, with Gaudí’s endorsement, he joined the Artistic Circle of Sant Lluc, with which he would regularly exhibit at the Sala Parés. He was also associated with the group Els Quatre Gats, alongside Ramón Casas, Manuel Hugué, Isidre Nonell, and Pablo Picasso, among others.
In 1901 he traveled to Paris, where Picasso and Hugué were already living. He worked as an illustrator for publications such as ¡Cu-cut! and L'Esquella de la Torratxa, producing politically satirical drawings in a style close to art nouveau. In 1907 he participated in the Barcelona Fine Arts Exhibition, where he received a third-class medal.
Due to Miguel Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship, Opisso abandoned political satire and shifted toward costumbrista themes, specializing in popular scenes. His works from this period are characterized by dense crowds in lively Barcelona settings. After exhibiting several times at Sala Parés, he held his first solo exhibition in 1935 at the Syra Galleries in Barcelona. During the postwar years, he continued to exhibit in various Barcelona galleries, achieving significant success with both critics and the public. In 1953 he was honored in his hometown during the 4th Art Fair of Tarragona.
In his early years, in addition to signing with his surname, Opisso often used a monogram formed by an “O” for Opisso containing an “R” for his first name. Most of his works are preserved in the Opisso Museum in Barcelona, but his art is also represented in the National Art Museum of Catalonia and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Strasbourg.
As for exhibitions, one highlight was held at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in 2004 under the title Catalan Painting: From Naturalism to Noucentisme, which included his work Carnaval. He was also the subject of anthological exhibitions at the Saló del Tinell (1979), the Palau de la Virreina (1980), the Barcelona International Boat Show (1973), the Fundació La Caixa (1988, 2004, 2008), and Caixa Tarragona (2003).

Ricard Opisso Sala
Son of Alfredo Opisso y Viñas, journalist, historian and critic, and of Antonia Sala y Gil, his sister Regina Opisso, was also a writer. He comes from an enlightened family full of artists. His paternal grandfather was Josep Opisso y Roig, journalist and director of the Diari de Tarragona, father of the also writers Antonia Opisso y Viña and Antoni Opisso y Viña. His maternal great-grandfather was the painter Pere Pau Montaña, his maternal grandfather the fabulist Felipe Jacinto Sala and his maternal uncle, the painter Emilio Sala y Francés. His nephew was Arturo Llorens y Opisso, a writer better known under his pseudonym Arturo Llopis. Although he was born in Tarragona, his family moved to Barcelona when Opisso was only two years old. In modernist Barcelona at the end of the 19th century, Opisso worked as an assistant to Antonio Gaudí in the works of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona since 1892. He was linked to the group Els Quatre Gats, along with Ramón Casas, Manuel Hugué, Isidre Nonell and Pablo Picasso , among others. Later he worked as an illustrator in publications such as ¡Cu-cut! since 1903) and L'Esquella de la Torratxa (from 1912), signing drawings oriented to political satire, which are graphically related to art nouveau. Due to the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera, Opisso abandons political satire and his drawings approach the theme of manners, specializing in popular scenes. His drawings from this period are characterized by presenting motley crowds in popular Barcelona settings. His best known works for the cartoon magazine TBO (in which he had begun to collaborate in 1919) date from this time, where he specialized in making covers. He collaborated with many other publications, such as En Patufet, Pocholo, etc. In the postwar period, Opisso's pictorial work triumphed in the galleries of Barcelona. In 1953 he received the recognition of his hometown at the IV Tarragona Art Fair. At the Hotel Astoria in Barcelona, a collection of more than 200 illustrations by Opisso has been permanently displayed since the end of 2007 on its ground floor (reception room and cafeteria). The drawings and posters come from the private collection of Jordi Clos, president of the chain that owns the hotel (Derby Hotels Collection).
