About the Item

Richard Edward Miller is especially noted for his depictions of elegant young women in sunlit interiors and gardens, exemplified by Young Woman at Her Dressing Table. According to Miller scholar, Marie Louise Kane, the work was likely painted in France and features motifs characteristic of this period for the artist, including white door frames, Venetian blinds, wicker furniture, and decorative accessories. Recognized as a leading figure of the Giverny colony, Miller is distinguished by the vivid color and strong design of his paintings, reflecting his belief in art as a decorative, visual experience rather than narrative. His work is held in numerous major public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Cincinnati Art Museum.

At the Mirror

the most important American Impressionists of his age. While many of his contemporaries focused on the landscape, Frieseke gained his inspiration from the figural, and in particular the theme of femininity. His works capture female figures engaging in traditionally feminine roles — strolling in the garden or posed in a domestic interior. At the Mirror...

"Woman Dressing"
By Frederick Carl Frieseke
Located in Lambertville, NJ
Jim’s of Lambertville Fine Art Gallery is proud to offer this work by Frederick Carl Frieseke (1874 – 1939). Frederick Carl Frieseke was a member of the third generation of American painters to inhabit and find inspiration from Giverny, France. His use of bright colors and light, to depict the female figure, defined the style of the Giverny group during his residence, synthesizing aspects of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Born in the United States, Frieseke studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. In 1898, he moved to Paris to enroll in the Académie Julian, where he studied under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. During this time, Frieseke also briefly studied with James A. Whistler, who would prove to be a great inspiration in Frieseke’s early works. From Whistler, Frieseke adopted a tonalist palette and a decorative approach to figurative painting. While in Paris, Frieseke’s works were featured at the American Art Association of Paris and in several annual salon exhibitions. His painting, “Before the Mirror...

Lady at her Vanity
By Henry Mayo Bateman
Located in Sheffield, MA
Henry Mayo Bateman English, 1887–1970 Lady at her Vanity Watercolor on paper 9 ½ by 10 ½ in. W/frame 18 ½ by 19 ½ in. Signed & dated 1904 lower on left H. M. Bateman was noted for his "The Man Who..." series of cartoons, featuring comically exaggerated reactions to minor and usually upper-class social gaffes, such as "The Man Who Lit His Cigar Before the Loyal Toast", "The Man Who Threw a Snowball at St. Moritz" and "The Boy Who Breathed on the Glass at the British Museum." He was born in the small village of Sutton Forest in New South Wales, Australia. His parents were Henry Charles Bateman and Rose Mayo. His father had left England for Australia in 1878 at the age of 21 to seek his fortune, then returned to England briefly in 1885 before going back with an English wife. Soon after Henry was born, his strong-willed mother insisted that they return to London 'and civilisation'. He had one sister, Phyllis, three years younger. Henry remained in England for the remainder of his life except for one disappointing visit to his birthplace.[citation needed] Henry was always drawing from an early age, consistently producing funny drawings...
