About the Item

Date: 1955 Medium: Gouache on Board Dimensions: 24.00" x 18.50" Signature: Signed Lower Right Original cover illustration for The Saturday Evening Post, February 5, 1955. The Post described, “The fond parents of little Charley Caterwaul have launched him in music lessons and yet he is not glowy-eyed with gratitude. Perhaps he is depressed because he must practice half an hour each weekday until summer vacation —say fifty hours— and he has now done five minutes. Well, probably little violinists can't comprehend the value of years of wailing toil —one out of a hundred of them may become a glorious artist, quite a number will make the school orchestra and truly savor being creative, and the rest will at least learn that there’s more to producing lovely melody than turning an electric switch. Now, then, Charley, stop holding that bow like a baseball bat! And can’t you be thoughtful enough to let your mother wear ear muffs?” (The Saturday Evening Post, February 5, 1955, p. 3)
