Robert Carroll was an American artist born in 1934. With an international career, Carroll studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Western Reserve University. Upon graduation in 1957, he cultivated an interest in nuclear physics during his obligatory stint in the armed forces; afterwards he became friends with protagonists of the beat generation Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. Another friend was Willem De Kooning, whose artistic style, Abstract Expressionism, would influence Carroll.
Carroll moved to Rome when he was 25, and quickly became part of a local circle of intellectuals that included Elio Vittorini and Salvatore Quasimodo. Although he married an Italian, Carroll never applied for Italian citizenship; to make up for that, the town of Massa conferred honorary citizenship on him in 2015. He was primarily known for his painting as well as for multimedia installations that harmonized images and sound. To read more in Italian, visit Florence’s La Repubblica news site.
Carroll passed on September 4, 2016 at the age of 84 in Massa Carrara in Tuscany, Italy.

Robert Carroll
Robert Carroll was an American artist born in 1934 in Painesville, Ohio. He has been studying Arts at the Cleveland Institute of Arts, where he graduated in 1957. Since the end of the 1950s, he has been associating with some of the most important writers and intellectuals of the beat generation, such as Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. Carroll did work a lot with the American artist Willem de Kooning, who introduced him to cultural circles in some of the most important cities in Europe when he moved in 1959. Since the 1960s, he attended many personal and collective exhibitions all over the world and after the mid-1980s, he did important research on multimedia art.

A visionary painter with ties to the avant-garde artistic community in New York at midcentury, William Scharf nevertheless defies art historical categorization. His abstracted compositions of organic and geometric formal elements recall the free associations of Surrealism and the all-over grandeur of Abstract Expressionism, and at the same time embody a very individual and immediately recognizable pictorial sense. Scharf combines virtuoso paint handling, vibrant color, and rich symbolic language in canvases that engage the viewer in a transcendent and emotional dialogue. This dialogue is accomplished in part through recurring symbols, which allude to hidden, mysterious narratives. Scharf plumbs the psychological wells of collective myths for symbolic content: the crown of thorns, the ladder, the fish, and the cross can be found throughout, functioning not, as one might expect, as religious symbols, but rather as a means through which to access a deeper, symbolic level of visual communication.
Born in 1927 in Media, Pennsylvania, an early friendship with renowned artist N.C. Wyeth encouraged Scharf’s artistic efforts from a very young age.
