Beautiful black frame with black edging
This symbolist painting from the beginning of the 20th century was made by an English or American artist named Robertson. The subject is mysterious: a female prophet giving a speech to peasants who gather to listen to her.
There are several symbols represented in this painting.
The scene is located between the countryside and the town represented in the background with numerous houses. A figure in front with a scythe symbolizes death. The prophetess points her finger to the sky and holds in her left hand what appears to be a lantern that may be the symbol of the light of Truth that she brings to the peasants. The yellow light which bathes the entire composition shows that we are at sunset. Eventually the couple at the bottom right seems to be like a siganture of the painting, the man with the pipe in particular looking at us. He seems to call us to witness the act of prophecy that is taking place.
The painting is dated 1909. That year, England experienced a serious political crisis which began with the rejection of Lord George's “people's budget” on November 30, 1909, introducing a progressive taxation by the House of Lords. The Chancellor of the Exchequer presented a tax reform including a land tax and a “super tax” on high salaries. This reform caused a constitutional crisis with the rejection of the budget by the House of Peers with a conservative majority and the dissolution of Parliament on December 3, 1909.

And also the silhouettes of his small characters painted in bright colors. This village fair is a rich composition with many characters, musicians, drummers, peasant men and women, children. The scene is very cheerful and it has the charm of the festive atmosphere of the Dutch countryside with many picturesque details represented such as the dancers with a glass or a pitcher in their hands, the dishes or baskets which circulate filled with food, the child playing with a dog or the musician with the violin who animates the assembly.
