Samuel S. Carr was an American pastoral and landscape painter. Originally from England, he trained at the Royal School of Design in Chester, relocating to the U.S. around 1862. Upon his arrival, he settled in Brooklyn, New York, where he resided with his sister and her husband and where he would work until the end of his life. He began exhibiting genre paintings in the 1870s, and eventually developed his reputation as a painter of Coney Island subjects. These leisurely scenes at amusement parks often depict children playing.
Samuel S. Carr was a member of the Brooklyn Art Club 1879 to 1907. His work was exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; and the National Academy of Design. Carr’s work is held in the permanent collections of the New Britain Museum of American Art, Connecticut; Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, Massachusetts; and the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts.

An expatriate Italian American, Cyrus Cuneo spent much of his career in England, from where he served as an artist-illustrator of the American West for the London Illustrated News. It was written that he became "an Englishman by preference and adoption."
In London, he was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and from 1905 to 1912, he exhibited at the Royal Academy.
He paid for his art training in Paris with James Whistler by boxing professionally. In 1908 on assignment with the Illustrated News, he made an extensive trip back to California and through Canada, where he was a special guest of personnel representing the Canadian Pacific Railroad. This painting is in excellent condition and signed lower right. William Hicok Low first trained with the sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer.
