Sandra Cohen’s “Pantomime Horse” is an unframed 18 x 18 x 1 inch acrylic painting on canvas, loosely painted in tones of yellow, orange, pink, brown, and white. The figures of two women trapped within a comical horse costume gaze at the viewer from their tiny abstract domain, the hazy passage of moons seen in the distance. This painting is signed on the back, with orange painted sides.
Inspired by Cohen’s experience as a touring musician, “Pantomime Horse” is part of “the band” series, where creatures inhabited by one or more persons appear to be performing ‘themselves’ in surreal spaces.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
