About the Item

"Madonna del Granduca", after Raphael Oil on Canvas: 34 x 22.5 in. Frame: 45 x 33 ½ in. Inscribed verso. Pitti Palace red wax seal verso*. Fine Gilt Carved Wood Frame. The Madonna del Granduca is a Madonna painting by the Italian renaissance artist Raphael (Raffaello Santi, 1483-1520), a principal work at the Pitti Palace in Florence, which houses the Palatine Gallery. Our Madonna was painted by the highly talented Florentine artist, Santi Corsi, whose workshop was only a 15-minute walk away from the Pitti Palace. He specialized in painting the rooms of the Palatine Gallery, documenting the masterpieces displayed and collected over the centuries by the Medici and Habsburg-Lorraine families. Santi Corsi had obtained permission to reproduce the paintings exhibited, and carry the wax seal of the Pitti on the reverse of many of his works. His painting of the public opening of the collection was bequeathed by the last heiress of the Medici family to the city of Florence at the beginning of the 19th century. Corsi’s interior painting ‘La Sala Di Apollo’ (Hall of Apollo) in Palazzo Pitti, shows Raphael’s Madonna de Granduca. Gallery notes: The red wax seal of the Pitti Palace strongly suggests Santi Corsi painted our Madonna at the Palatine gallery directly from Raphael’s, which allowed the artist to faithfully reproduce the work with such high quality. Presented in a Fine Gilt Carved Wood Frame. *Relined onto a new transparent support canvas with the wax seal re-sited on stretcher verso.

Portrait of Jeannie Netter, wearing a Burgundy dress
By Fedor Encke
Located in West Sussex, GB
Fedor Encke (1851-1926) – German Full length Portrait of Jeannie Netter, standing in an interior, wearing a Burgundy Velvet Dress holding a Pink Rose Oil on canvas :85 ¾ x 50 ¼ in. Frame :103 x 67 ¼ in. Signed & inscribed ‘New York’. Circa 1910 Jeannie Netter was an American born musician and song-writer but was mostly merited for her sculpture having been taught by the Russian artist Bernstamm. Fedor Encke was born in Berlin, Germany in 1851. Younger brother of Erdmann Encke who was a sculptor, Encke was the illegitimate grandson of King Frederick Wilhelm II of Prussia and Mistress Wilhelmine Encke, Countess of Lichtenau. Fedor studied under Karl Gussow in Berlin and then went on to study in Rome and Paris. Although he set up a studio in Berlin during the 1880’s, he seems to have travelled regularly between Paris and New York painting many American Society sitters, including President Theodore Roosevelt. Encke’s portrait of Roosevelt dressed in Rough Rider uniform, originally hung in the dining room of the White House and is now at the Presidents place of birth, Segamore Hill, New York. This portrait was also published as the frontispiece of ‘The Rough Riders’ by C. Scribners&Sons, 1899. Encke was in Paris in 1902 and painted the two banking giants, John H. Harjes and J.P. Morgan both having their portraits painted at the same time. To try and finish Morgan’s painting Encke hired a young photographer named Edward Steichen to take Morgan’s picture as a kind of aid memoir to minimize the sitting time. This photograph and the painting that resulted from it caused a considerable stir because of the uncompromising pose of Morgan. The portrait became synonymous with the new capitalism. Encke seems to have been very well connected socially and painted for many members of the European nobility as a result. Encke died in 1926. Works in Museums: Segamore Hill, New York (Portrait of Theodore Roosevelt) National Portrait Gallery America; Smithsonian; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Philadelphia Museum of Art. Madonna Maria Sassoferrato Paint Oil on canvas Old master 18th Century Italian
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Madonna with Sleeping Child Follower of Giovan Battista Salvi known as 'il Sassoferrato' (1609 - 1685) Roman painter 18th century Oil on canvas Measurements: canvas 64 x 50 cm, in frame 76 x 62 cm. This delicate depiction of the Madonna in adoration of the Child exhibits all the human dimension and sweetness of the maternal atmosphere: Mary clasps the sleeping child to her in a tender embrace, which touches her cheek, enveloped and protected by the mantle and even a flap of the mother's veil. The pictorial style and composition recall the ambit of Giovan Battista Salvi, the Sassoferrato, who distinguished himself expressly for this subject, with the Virgin immortalised in a humble and strongly earthly pose, depicted with simple white, red and blue colours and delicate plays of nuances on the faces and hands. This iconographic prototype was so successful that it became the painting for countless works destined for devotion during the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly appreciated for private commissions due to its marked gentleness and formal perfection, particularly of the faces. Born in Marchigiano, Salvi developed his activity in Rome, following the dictates of the classicist sacred painting of the Bolognese school of Reni, Carracci and Domenichino, but succeeding in having an autonomous and therefore clearly distinguishable style.  In very good overall condition, there are some small scattered restorations and some unravelling of the painted surface. Framed in a beautiful gilded frame. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The work is sold with a certificate of authenticity and descriptive iconographic card. We take care of and organise the transport of the purchased works, both for Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers. It is also possible to see the painting in the gallery in Riva del Garda...
