Sarah van Rossem studied at the Academy of Fine Art and Education at Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Tilburg. In 2025, ten years after graduating, she presents her first museum exhibition at Museum Jan Cunen in Oss.
Sarah draws her inspiration from the forest. Her fascination lies in observing natural processes, structures, and textures — from tree bark to leaves, and from roots to the interplay of light and color filtering through vegetation. During walks through wooded landscapes, she carefully collects natural materials, which she later incorporates into her graphic artworks in the studio.
Her studio practice is intuitive and exploratory. Natural elements such as plants, branches, and grasses are pressed onto heavy etching paper using a large etching press. She works in multiple layers with etching ink, allowing the veins and relief of the plants to remain tangibly present in the final work. Her prints are not only visual experiences, but sensory ones as well — as if nature itself has been transferred onto paper.
Characteristic of her work are natural color palettes, layered compositions, and subtle transitions, through which she seeks to document what she encounters outdoors. She views unpredictability as an inherent quality of nature and embraces it as an essential part of her artistic process.
Sarah works with the monotype technique, meaning each print is a one-of-a-kind work; editions are not possible.
