Scandinavian School, early twentieth century. Unsigned and inscribed, verso, on stretcher bar, 'Anna Ancher' with additional indistinct inscription and painted circa 1910.
A psychologically-penetrating portrait of a young woman shown in profile, wearing a gold earring and a polychrome silk headscarf, and contrasted against a variegated jade background. An exceptionally fine character study filled with humor and painted by a skilled and informed hand with reference to the traditions of 15th century Florentine portraiture.
