Steven H. Rehfeld's 'The Man of the Mountains' is a compelling surrealist oil on canvas piece measuring 45" x 44.5". This canvas intricately fuses elements of landscape and figurative art to explore the deep connection between humans and nature. The palette is dominated by earthy greens and blues that evoke the serenity and vastness of mountainous terrain, juxtaposed with stark whites and subtle hints of red, providing a stark contrast that highlights the raw, elemental qualities of the scene.
The figure, melded into the landscape, appears contemplative and integrated within the surroundings, suggesting a symbiosis or perhaps a dominance of nature over man. This integration evokes a feeling of awe and reverence towards the natural world, coupled with a sense of introspection. The artwork invites viewers to ponder their relationship with the natural environment, emphasizing the powerful and often overwhelming influence of our landscapes on our identity and existence.

Steven H. Rehfeld
Steven H. Rehfeld, a California artist, holds a B.A. in studio art from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He draws inspiration from the 'Outsiders' school of art that originated in 19th-century France, known as the Naïve movement. Also referred to as the Naïve or Primitive art movement, was comprised of artists with no formal art training who discovered their talent and began painting. Many of these artists came from challenging backgrounds, and their raw talent remained untapped until they expressed themselves through art. The movement quickly gained prominence and spread worldwide. Steven Rehfeld's artistic style has evolved beyond the Naïve movement, incorporating earth elements to create a basic and raw interpretation of his artistic message. Discover the exclusive collection of Steven H. Rehfeld's artwork at The American Art Gallery. Artist Statement "My oil, acrylic, and mixed media paintings explore the dynamic relationship between progressiveness and tradition, personal and cultural experiences, and the interplay between the human form and iconography. Through these explorations, I engage in a dialogue that reveals how the intangible influences the material world. Color contrast forms, negative/positive space, and visual kinetic energy shape these artistic relationships. Additionally, I fuse abstract art with elements of realism to create a unique artistic experience." Surrealist Landscape, Mountain with Nude Woman - Perls Gallery
By Frederick Haucke
Located in Miami, FL
A nude white woman gazes out and over a Giorgio de Chirico like surrealist landscape to an overly dramatic sunset with stylized orange rays. In the center of the composition is a cut-out of a mountain with a moat. In the extreme foreground is a silhouetted orange plane with a spiral of leaves. Along with the empty landscapes of de Chirico, it's possible that Frederick Haucke was influenced by Salvador Dalí " The Persistence of Memory" in 1931, and Dali's painting was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in 1934. In that painting, Dali, paints a vacant landscape doted with symbols from the unconscious. This painting by Frederick Haucke owes a debt to giants of the Surrealist movement but still, Haucke carves out his style. The shape of the nude's hair echoes the shape of the sunset. What the symbolism to the mountain is and the flower in the foreground we will leave to the viewer to speculate. It was shown at the very prestigious Pearls Gallery in New York City. Artists in the famous Perls' stable included Derain, Dufy, Rouault, Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani, Pascin, Soutine, Chagall and Vlaminck. With a 1971 retrospective of Alexander Calder's work. This Haucke from the Perls Gallery...
