This rather mysterious portrait is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist who painted it. This is suggested by the three-quarter pose and the gaze fixed on the viewer.
What this man seems to be staring at is himself.

The following, submitted by a researcher of the Ashworth Collection of Native American and Western Art, is from the artist's obituary in the Fort Smith, Arkansas "Times Record" newspaper, October 20, 2002. Everett F. Spruce, well-known artist, teacher, professor emeritus, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at age 94. Everett Spruce was born on a farm in Conway to William E. and Fannie McCarty Spruce. He came to Dallas, at age 17, on a scholarship to study at the Dallas Art Institute, under Olin Travis and Thomas M. Stell Jr. In 1931, he became gallery assistant at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts and in 1934 married Alice V. Kramer, a fellow art student. Frederick Carl Frieseke was a member of the third generation of American painters to inhabit and find inspiration from Giverny, France. His use of bright colors and light, to depict the female figure, defined the style of the Giverny group during his residence, synthesizing aspects of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
Born in the United States, Frieseke studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. In 1898, he moved to Paris to enroll in the Académie Julian, where he studied under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. During this time, Frieseke also briefly studied with James A. Whistler, who would prove to be a great inspiration in Frieseke’s early works. From Whistler, Frieseke adopted a tonalist palette and a decorative approach to figurative painting.

Societies have long employed images that visualize their belief systems or attempt to encapsulate a narrative of our human destiny. This work follows in that tradition. The uppermost vignette is a silhouette from the nursery rhyme “Jack be nimble”, a children’s rhyme that refers to a 19th century game and a form of fortune telling. In Roman mythology Parcae (plural) were the personifications of fate. They are used in this painting as bookend figures on either side of a cosmic machine that answers questions of fate. Three vintage light bulbs labeled “yes”, “maybe” and “no” sit atop the clock – like machine and illuminate answers to humanity’s eternal questions.
At the top of the composition are several re- configured tarot / divination cards belonging to an anonymous person circa 1930’s. The cards here are labeled; satisfaction dark woman, jealousy, dark man and betrayal. The grouping of these four cards refers to both positive and negative potentials concerning fate and offer clues to the viewer on a number of possible scenarios it could describe. The lower portion of the picture contains two silhouetted vignettes on either side of a central image of stars and planets against a dark void.
The left image is of two children in a small wagon being pulled by a beetle. This is a reference to Egyptian mythology and the sun god Khepri. who personifies birth / rebirth. Khepri is portrayed as a beetle that pushes the sun across the sky. Here the young innocents...

BIO
Painter, printmaker and sculptor, Leon Bibel was born in San Francisco in 1913. He trained at the California School of Fine Arts and received a scholarship to study under the German Impressionist Maria Riedelstein. He worked in collaboration with Bernard Zackheim, a student of Diego Rivera, to create frescoes for the San Francisco Jewish Community Center and the University of California Medical School.

The lamentation of Christ was one of the most popular scenes depicted in European art from the 11th to the 18th century. Depicting the lamentation or pieta from the Italian word for ‘Pity’ of Christ with Jesus’s mother Mary cradling his body.
Christ is depicted nude, wearing only a blueish loincloth around his waist, a horizontal scar marking his rib cage. His head and torso are held upright, and his eyes are closed, his right arm lays to his side as does his left. Standing behind him, is the Virgin Mary, outfitted in her traditional dress of a robe with a white veil. She stands behind Christ and bends slightly, looking looking away from Christ to something that has caught her attention, her right hand holding his shoulder. Her left-hand carefully holds his arm.
This work is quite unusual with Mary . This stunning work jumps out with its dark background and strong flesh colours.
