About the Item

Artist: Tom Cowsert (USA, 1962) Title: Bailaores flamencos Date: 1999 Technique: Acrylic on canvas Dimensions: 61 × 50 cm (24 × 19.7 in) Signature: Signed and dated lower right: T. V. Cowsert ’99 Framing: Unframed Condition: Excellent. Firm canvas, saturated colors, and a stable paint layer with no visible cracks or retouching. Description: In Bailaores flamencos, Tom Cowsert displays his distinctive cubist and theatrical language, merging rhythm, geometry, and emotion. The figures, broken into planes of vivid color—reds, yellows, and ochres—evoke the passionate movement of flamenco dancing under stage light. The background, with its draped curtains and checkered floors, enhances the sense of spectacle, while the black contour lines define the formal structure with a precision reminiscent of modernist stained glass. The work combines Andalusian temperament with the discipline of classical cubism, achieving a vibrant synthesis of music, form, and color. Artist’s Biography: Tom Cowsert (b. 1962, Mississippi, USA) is a self-taught painter who left a career in finance to devote himself fully to art. He has lived in Spain for over twenty-five years and has exhibited in Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Granada, Marbella, Mallorca, Ibiza, and Toledo, as well as in France, Italy, Switzerland, and the United States. His style—cubist, figurative, and expressive—fuses geometric fragmentation with chromatic theatricality, influenced by Picasso, Matisse, and Juan Gris, as well as by Spanish masters such as Velázquez, El Greco, Sorolla, and Dalí. His works are held in private collections across Europe and America and are recognized for reinterpreting the cubist tradition with a contemporary and Mediterranean sensitivity. Comparable Artists: For its compositional structure and vibrant color palette, Cowsert’s work can be compared to that of Juan Gris, Louis Marcoussis, André Lhote, Jean Metzinger, and Rafael Zabaleta.
