About the Item

Allegorical Mythological Scene Unidentified Artist 17th–18th Century Oil on canvas Framed: 149 x 196 cm Canvas: 131 x 180 cm No signatured Description This remarkable Baroque/Rococo-period oil painting presents a mythological or allegorical scene with dramatic movement and rich symbolism. The central figure, a youthful, semi-nude hunter adorned with a green drape and quiver, appears to be Cephalus, a figure from Greek mythology, known for his tragic love story with Procris. He reclines in a landscape setting, interacting with an attendant and cherubs. One cherub holds a bow, while another ascends into the sky with a burning torch—possibly symbolizing fate, divine will, or a transition between earthly and celestial realms. A majestic eagle, often associated with Zeus or fate, perches nearby, reinforcing the mythological weight of the scene. The presence of birds, clouds, and distant flames adds to the work's allegorical depth. Executed in a European academic tradition, the piece showcases influences from the Baroque and Rococo styles, reminiscent of Peter Paul Rubens, François Boucher, or Luca Giordano. The flowing composition, dramatic gestures, and use of chiaroscuro enhance the emotional tension and grandeur typical of 17th–18th-century allegorical paintings. This museum-quality painting is a highly decorative and collectible artwork, ideal for historical collectors, interior decorators, and connoisseurs of Old Masters-style works. It retains its original ornate gilded frame, adding to its authenticity and visual impact.
