About the Item

Antique 16th-century Italian painting. Oil on panel artwork depicting a Madonna and Child with the young Saint John, of extraordinary pictorial quality. The Virgin is intent on reading while Jesus embraces the Infant Saint John in an affectionate embrace. The pyramidal composition combines sweetness and solemnity, with characteristics typical of Central and Northern Mannerist painting. Leonardo's influences are evident, particularly evident in the Virgin's facial features and in the depiction of the landscape. This is achieved using the technique of aerial perspective, a method perfected by the Tuscan genius to create depth through the gradual loss of sharpness and chromatic intensity, thus simulating the effect of atmosphere. The panel is striking for the chromatic brilliance of the draperies and the intimate naturalness of the child's gestures. The painter also demonstrates particular mastery in the rendering of the flesh tones, treated with a soft and nuanced application that creates volume through a skillful modulation of tonal transitions. A rare and fascinating painting whose subject matter and quality make it a perfect addition to a collection of early religious art.
