About the Item

A great 17th-century religious painting. This painting oil on canvas depicts a poignant subject, highly popular in the Baroque era: The Lamentation over the Dead Christ. This intense and emotionally powerful artwork features a palette of brown and red earth tones. The reclining Christ is surrounded by figures sculpted by light, immersed in a dramatic atmosphere accentuated by the stormy sky over Golgotha. We see the Virgin on the left next to Mary Magdalene, while Joseph of Arimathea supports the body of Jesus. Below, we find two mourning cherubs next to the sarcophagus and the crown of thorns. Behind the group, a vast landscape unfolds. On the ridge, Golgotha can be seen with its three now-empty crosses, while to the left, the Temple of Jerusalem appears, struck by a sudden lightning bolt. The quality of the drapery, the anatomical power, and the theatricality of the composition suggest this is the work of a great Emilian artist from the second half of the 17th century. At the bottom right it shows traces of a signature that is difficult to read (see photo), currently being studied. A large-format, dramatic painting, ideal for classical settings or a collection of Baroque sacred paintings. The frame is a striking 20th-century gilded wood and plaster frame, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. The artwork has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and repainting in some areas. Overall, it is in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 142.5 x W 122 cm.

The Lamentation of Christ, 16th Century Oil Old Master
Located in London, GB
Circle of Ridolfo Ghirlandaio 1483 - 1561 Oil on panel Image size: 20 ½ x 16 ½ inches (52 x 42 cm) Handmade contemporary style gilt frame The lamentation of Christ was one of the most popular scenes depicted in European art from the 11th to the 18th century. Depicting the lamentation or pieta from the Italian word for ‘Pity’ of Christ with Jesus’s mother Mary cradling his body. Christ is depicted nude, wearing only a blueish loincloth around his waist, a horizontal scar marking his rib cage. His head and torso are held upright, and his eyes are closed, his right arm lays to his side as does his left. Standing behind him, is the Virgin Mary, outfitted in her traditional dress of a robe with a white veil. She stands behind Christ and bends slightly, looking looking away from Christ to something that has caught her attention, her right hand holding his shoulder. Her left-hand carefully holds his arm. This work is quite unusual with Mary . This stunning work jumps out with its dark background and strong flesh colours. Ridolfo Ghirlandaio was the son of the eminent painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. Following his father’s death in 1494, when he was just eleven years old, Ridolfo is thought to have continued his training with his uncle Davide, who had taken over the Ghirlandaio workshop. Vasari noted that Ridolfo also studied with Fra Bartolommeo...

"The Entombment of Christ, " Fine Copy of Titian Masterpiece, Oil on Canvas
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Beautifully painted, probably in the 19th or early 20th centuries, this copy of the famed "Le Transport du Christ au Tombeau" painting by Titian (Tiziano) in the collection of the Louvre in Paris, was recently found in the attic of a Hudson Valley monastery. The Louvre original, considered an early painting by the master, dates to the same period as his famous "Pastoral Concert" and shows the strong influence of Gorgione. This scene depicts the collaborative efforts of Joseph of Arimathea, Saint John and Nicodemus as they moved Christ's body from the cross to his tomb, watched by the two grieving Marys -- his mother and Mary Magdalene. It is not known who painted this copy, though of course artists over the years have copied the great Master paintings...
