Titled Giving Thanks to St. Francis of Assisi for Returning Our Home, the painting was created by an anonymous Mexican artist and rendered in the traditional ex-voto format. It is presented in a contemporary custom frame handcrafted by artisan Michael Blatnik, carefully chosen to complement the historic character of the work.
The hand-painted inscription tells the story of Cholita and Francisca Díaz of Guanajuato, who give thanks to Saint Francis of Assisi for the return of their home—described as the only possession they had. With their housing restored, they express relief at being able to live peacefully once again and, in an extraordinary gesture of devotion, dedicate their property to the saint’s convent as an offering of gratitude. The narrative provides a rare and poignant glimpse into mid-20th-century Mexican social history, faith, and communal values.
Ex-votos were traditionally commissioned following divine intervention to fulfill a sacred vow and were displayed publicly in churches as professions of faith. Once the vow was fulfilled, many were destroyed or sold, making surviving examples increasingly scarce.
