About the Item
Attributed to Austrian genre painter Franz Schams (1823-1883). This intimate oil painting depicts a lively gathering of musicians engaged in a much-needed rehearsal. An apparently dissatisfied violinist can be seen front and centre, covering his ear with his hand as he shouts loudly to his fellow musician to stop playing. The painting has been beautifully housed in a large gilt-effect frame with high-relief gesso mouldings. Monogrammed to the lower right. On canvas on stretchers.
