Olio su tela.
La grande tela è quasi interamente occupata dalla figura del santo che, seduto sulla roccia in uno spoglio ambiente esterno appena accennato, è intento alla meditazione; il santo è accompagnato dai suoi tradizionali simbolo iconografici: il libro, ovvero secondo la tradizione la Vulgata, di notevoli dimensioni a sottolinearne l'importanza; il leone, animale a cui il santo nel deserto tolse una spina dalla zampa rendendolo docile e fedele e che è diventato simbolo delle passioni domate; il santo tiene con la mano destra un sasso con cui si batte il petto, in segno di penitenza, ed è parzialmente avvolto da una veste rossa e bianca, la veste cardinalizia, che però gli cade dalle spalle, segno dell'abbandono della carica.
Lo stile pittorico è vicino ai modi di Johann Carl Loth (1638 -1698), pittore tedesco attivo soprattutto in Italia, che raffigurò più volte il santo, sempre con grande attenzione al libro sacro e che ebbe contatti con il Caravaggio e la sua pittura.
La figura qui presentata emerge con grande potenza dallo sfondo scuro e appena accennato, con grande risalto della muscolatura dell' uomo e dei suoi connotati, realizzato con potenti effetti di luci e ombre e con l' utilizzo prevalente del colore rosso, nella veste ma anche nelle sfumature dell' incarnato e nel pelo dell'animale, ad evocare la passione e la forza interiore del santo.
ll dipinto, già sottoposto in passato a restauro e ritelatura, è presentato in cornice antica ridorata.

Oil painting on canvas. It is a vintage copy of the engraving of the same name made by Annibale Carracci (1560-1609), which had immediate success and gave rise to a series of printed replicas and painted copies. It presents the moment of the Passion in which Christ is crowned with the crown of thorns, the object of torture, the disparaging symbol of his proclamation as King of Kings. The act is performed by two figures, the Roman soldier and the Jew, representing the two people who they took part in Christ's death sentence. The figures, vigorous and sanguine, those of the two tormentors paler and more inert than the victim, create an intertwined composition of bodies, with that of the central Jesus joining the other two, uniting them in the shared responsibility of what they are doing; placed sideways, Jesus has his head bent forcibly to the left by the soldier who imposes the crown of thorns on him, while the Jew on the right places the bamboo cane in his hand, replacing the scepter.
