About the Item

The Agony in the Garden. (Christ on the Mount of Olives). Technique: Oil on Panel, 4 wooden boards, not parqueted. Dim. with frame: 78cm x 67cm Dim. without frame: 52 x 62 cm German school of 16th century. Style: Nordic Renaissance. In good condition. Bears an inscription on the back. Very rare original 16th century wooden frame, where the wooden panel is inserted with an ingenious joints inside the frame. In the photos you can see the 16th century original wooden nails blocking the frame. This German Renaissance painting preserves the most archaic, late Gothic tradition, which pushes the painter to tell a detailed story, almost as if it were a fairy tale, with fictionalized details. The painting illustrates various episodes that precede the capture of Christ: in the foreground the three apostles asleep in the garden of Gethsemane next to the praying Jesus. The Agony in the Garden is a painting that takes elements from all four Gospel accounts. We see the angel comforting Christ from Luke (22:43), the three sleeping apostles from Mark's and Matthew's accounts, and in the far right, Judas leading a band with flaming torches, a detail only found in John 18:3. Jesus' hands touch the clouds with an angel holding a chalice, an allusion to Christ's future sufferings. In the background, a group of soldiers, dressed in the manner of the 16th century, follow the traitor Judas, who reveals the place where Christ is. The painter focuses on the grotesque-looking soldiers in contemporary dress (one with a striking scorpion on his shield). The details of the soldiers' clothing are very detailed and help in determining the age of painting. The painter focuses on the weapons, this remembers us the Landskneks and the armies and wars of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. In the distance you can glimpse a representation of the city, understood as Jerusalem but which has an obvious resemblance to Nordic, more precisely German, architecture. Condition report: cleaning and some not invasive restorations. This precious 16th century painting will be shipped with insurance and professional packaging.
