About the Item

The painting (oil on canvas 39.3x55.1; 46x61.8 in. with frame) depicts a bacchanal: on the left we see a figure who, from the detail of the paw appears to be a satyr, intent on raising a bowl forerunner of tastevins while in the center a winged putto leans on a gilded pitcher engraved with a gathering moment and a bacchante with a crown of leaves plays the cymbal; on the right side a figure from behind, probably another satyr. The somewhat tarnished expressions characterized by brush strokes that blush the cheeks, the loose and uninhibited poses highlight the altered state of drunkenness. For stylistic reasons it can be associated with Veneto Baroque production, particularly related to Giulio Carpioni's milieu, as can be seen from stringent comparisons of even the details, for example, the wreaths of thin blades of grass.
