Shakyamuni Buddha was the founder of Buddhism. He was born as Siddhartha Gautama to King Suddhodhan and Queen Mayadevi in 563 B.C in Lumbini, Nepal. He learned of the deep suffering experienced in life by people and left his palace life to find the causes of this suffering and the means to overcome it. After years of deep meditation he finally attained enlightenment in Gaya.
Shakyamuni Buddha is the most popular and well known in the form of sitting cross legged in Padmasana posture with his right hand touching the earth (symbolic of his invoking the earth to bear witness to the truth and virtue of his actions and words) gesture and his left hand resting in his lap holding alms bowl. He wears a simple, thin monk’s robe that covers his left shoulder and arm and exposes the right. At the top of his head is a protuberance that is associated with his transcendent wisdom. His hair is shown as a mass of compact curls. His earlobes are elongated.
In some paintings Buddha is attended by his two main disciples –Shariputra and Maudgalyayana and is seen here are the expression of compassion.
This figure, like most Tibetan art, may be used in meditation as an aid to visualize one’s own enlightenment, as well as that of all other beings. There they become a focal point for meditation and ritual.
