A charming example of early 19th-century French folk art depicting a young woman in a striking red dress. Symbols throughout the composition suggest the woman is a sailor's wife. Wearing an anchor pendant around her neck and holding forget-me-nots in both hands, the clothing serves as an indication of her devotion to her husband at sea.
Unsigned. Well presented in a wooden frame with gilt-painted outer edges. On canvas laid to panel.
