About the Item
This painting depicts a gathering of female figures in a traditional or communal setting, known to be a common theme in this style of African art. The figures take nearly abstract forms, all done in vibrant, expressive colors. But each woman is unique, one carrying a baby on her back while proceeding out of the picture, another passing in the opposite direction bearing a loaded basket on her head, and two just seated, watching—itself, an endless form of entertainment. The cotton cloth canvas is imprinted in French translated as “Product of Zaire.” Perhaps the painting is, too.
