About the Item

This striking 1944 Ex-Voto, “Holy Tribute for the Return of Good Health,” is an original oil and ink on tin by an anonymous Mexican artist. Created in San Miguel de Allende, this devotional painting measures 7 ½ × 6 ¾ inches, presented in a contemporary hand-carved frame by artisan Michael Blatnik (outer dimensions: 15 ¼ × 14 ½ inches). The work commemorates a miraculous recovery: Narciso Silva gives thanks to Father Antonio Margil de Jesús for restoring his health after a serious illness. Inscribed in Spanish, the text translates: “In testimony of gratitude I offer this painting (Ex-Voto).” This deeply personal narrative, paired with its vivid folk-art imagery, reflects a long-standing Mexican tradition of Ex-Votos, created to honor divine intervention and fulfill sacred vows. Ex-Votos, historically displayed in churches, record acts of gratitude for survival or healing, often incorporating narrative inscriptions alongside painted imagery. These small-scale, highly expressive works became celebrated forms of folk art, admired and collected by artists including Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, who helped popularize them in the 20th century. This rare piece offers a remarkable glimpse into Mexican religious folk art, devotional painting, and cultural heritage, making it a compelling addition for collectors of Latin American art, ex-votos, and historic ritual objects.
