About the Item
Oil on Canvas. Northern Italian school of the 17th century.
The scene depicts the biblical episode from the First Book of Samuel, which thus relates : "Now when the evil spirit permitted by God overtook Saul, David took his harp and began to play; Saul was relieved, he was better, and the evil spirit departed from him."
In the painting the figures appear mighty and vigorous, both King Saul as well as the guards holding him, depicted in a web of figures occupying the entire left side of the scene; on the right, on the other hand, stands David, who though a young and simple shepherd, sits calmly before the furious king, playing his instrument with dignity and firmness.
In the background on the right , in a palace corridor, the king's priests and advisers watch the dinner in dismay.
On the frame of the painting is placed a nameplate attributive to Bernardo Strozzi.
The painting restored and re-tinted in the mid-20th century, is placed in a gilded style frame.
