About the Item
Oil on chestnut board. Central European school of the 16th century.
The traditional scene, presents the Infant Jesus who, in the arms of his Mother with whom he exchanges a tender glance, is about to place on the finger of Catherine of Alexandria the wedding ring, symbol of the mystical marriage that the young saint wanted to contract with the Divine Child.
The saint is depicted, as per her usual iconography, with a crown on her head and dressed in royal robes and jewelry, to emphasize its princely origin.
The painting is probably flemish author's work that looks back to Italian models of the '400-'500s.
The panel shows signs of previous restoration.
