Léon XIII – Trois-mâts carré en acier lancé le 22 juin 1902 à Chantenay-sur-Loire par la société A. Dubigeon et fils pour le compte de la Société anonyme des armateurs nantais. Huile sur toile signée en bas à droite 62.5 x 83.5 cm Le Léon-XIII avait appareillé de Portland (Orégon) le 20 avril 1907 avec un chargement de blé, étant commandé par le capitaine au long-cours Émile LUCAS. Retardé par le mauvais temps au cap Horn, il ne toucha Queenstown que le 25 septembre, après 158 jours de mer. Reparti aussitôt à ordres pour Limerick, il approcha de sa destination le 29 septembre, mais, le lendemain, un coup de vent de Sud-Est l’empêcha d’atterrir et l’entraîna au Nord de l’embouchure du Shannon. Le 1er octobre au soir, s’éleva une violente tempête d’Ouest ; à l’aube du 2 octobre, désemparé, la plupart de ses voiles en lambeaux, il ne put virer de bord, se trouvant trop près de la côte. A 8 h. 15, il toucha des roches à moins de 300 mètres de terre, à un mille de Quilty (Comté de Claire). La mer démontée, balayant le navire, hormis le gaillard, interdit toute tentative de sauvetage ce jour-là ; la position de l’équipage devenait alors tragique. Le 3 octobre, 13 hommes furent sauvés à grand-peine. Le lendemain, enfin, le croiseur britannique H.M.S. Arrogant parvint à sauver les 9 hommes épuisés qui demeuraient à bord. Dès que le temps le permit, deux navires de sauvetage tentèrent de renflouer le voilier, mais les tempêtes successives les empêchèrent d’y parvenir. Finalement, le 4 décembre 1907, le Léon-XIII se brisa en deux et devint perte totale. [• Henri PICARD : « La fin des cap-horniers. Les dernières aventures des long-courriers français. », éd. Édita, Lausanne, 1976. – Spécialement p. 108.] Pour ce dernier voyage, le trois mâts avait été armé au long-cours le 18 mai 1905 à Nantes, n° 359. Après son naufrage, il fut désarmé le 22 octobre 1907 dans ce quartier, n° 658. [• Inscription maritime ― Quartier de Nantes ― Rôle des bâtiments de commerce — Désarmements (1907) : Archives départementales de la Loire-Atlantique, n° 658, Cote 7 R 4 / 748.] Le 2 octobre 1907, alors que le bâtiment venait à peine de s’échouer, une lame embarquant par l’arrière emporta sur la dunette le capitaine Émile LUCAS et six hommes d’équipage. Les hommes furent saufs, mais le capitaine eut la jambe gauche brisée, après avoir été projeté violemment par-dessus la claire-voie de la chambre et être retombé sur une bite de tournage d’aussière (Témoignages du capitaine en second Louis BOUTIN et du charpentier Marcel CHIRON). Il ne put recevoir les premiers soins que le 4 octobre, à bord du croiseur britannique H.M.S. Arrogant. Il fut admis le lendemain à l’hôpital de l’île de Haulbowline. (Ibid.).
