About the Item
The author of this painting is unknown, but it is a direct derivation of Raffaello Sorbi's "The Grand Duke's Stagecoach," now housed in a private collection in Milan, as can be seen from the scene (identical throughout) and the inscription in ink in lane handwriting on the back of the canvas.
The original painting is dated 1904, so it belongs to the maturity of this Florentine artist who, in his late career, oriented his production toward subjects inspired by 18th-century art, focusing mainly on members of the Habsburg-Lorraine family who became Grand Dukes of Florence (such as Leopold II of Habsburg Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, the one referred to in this painting).
The work is most likely a copy from life, which can be included as part of an academic course or as a simple tribute.
