This painting (oil on paper applied to wood panel, 18 x 12, 5 cm) is a valuable example of the production of small-format works, thus aimed at a private audience, which was very common during the 17th century. For stylistic reasons such as the small and well-defined brushstroke, the palette with dark tones, the absence of drawing, and a coloration reminiscent of tonal painting, it can be attributed to the culture of the Venetian area.
The scene depicts the father and doctor of the church St. Jerome of Stridone, in the foreground on the right, with the typical long white beard, white tunic with red cloak and wide-brimmed hat, slightly folded in on himself, with his hands close on his lap, in the act of penitence. he is seated on a wooden stool, outdoors surrounded by trees, while the outline of a built-up area is silhouetted in the background.
