About the Item

This 19th-century oil painting is a high-quality interpretation of The Suitor's Visit by Gerard ter Borch,“Unsigned” created around 1658. Measuring 48 x 59 cm without the frame and 59 x 70 cm with the frame, this work stands out for its exceptional technical mastery and meticulous execution. The silver drapery of the central figure’s gown, executed with great finesse, is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable elements of this painting. The way light reflects off the surface of the fabric is rendered with such precision that the viewer can almost feel the delicate texture of the material. The artist has captured the fluidity and sheen of the cloth with a level of detail that recalls the great masters of the period, lending the work a rich visual quality. The dog, present in the scene, adds a symbolic and narrative dimension to the composition. As a symbol of fidelity and loyalty, its presence enriches the meaning of the scene, bringing a touch of softness and harmony to the whole. Although secondary in the arrangement of the painting, the animal remains a key element, emphasizing the intimate and elegant atmosphere that emanates from the piece. The artist succeeds in conveying the essence of Gerard ter Borch’s style while infusing it with his own sensibility and personal touch. The interpretation of the scene, while maintaining the elegance and subtlety of the original painting, stands out for its warm and delicate atmosphere. The handling of light, particularly on the gown and faces, enhances the intimacy and depth of the scene. This work is a testament to the pictorial mastery of the 19th century, a striking example of technical finesse and elegance. It will appeal to collectors attentive to the precision of drapery and the richness of textures, while offering a carefully crafted interpretation of a 17th-century masterpiece.

A Young Woman With Her Dog by Victor Ravet
Located in Stockholm, SE
In this exquisite painting by Victor Ravet, we are transported to an elegant interior setting reminiscent of the grandeur of high-class homes. The focal point is a woman adorned in a shimmering pink gown, radiating grace and sophistication. Bathed in gentle light, her dress catches the glimmer, accentuating her beauty. She holds a treat for a dog in her hand, enticing the furry companion who stands on its hind legs in eager anticipation. The canine's eyes fixated on the delicious morsel, capturing a moment of playful interaction between the woman and her loyal companion. The scene takes on a narrative quality as the young woman's other hand delicately lifts a curtain, hinting at another room beyond. This subtle gesture adds depth to the composition, suggesting a world of hidden secrets and intriguing possibilities within the opulent surroundings. Victor Ravet took inspiration from the Dutch Golden Age painters of the 17th century, such as Vermeer, Jacob Ochtervelt, and Gerrit Dou. This homage to their style and subject matter pays tribute to the timeless allure of domestic scenes, capturing a slice of life in a bygone era. With meticulous attention to detail, Ravet masterfully recreates the textures and fabrics, immersing the viewer in the sumptuousness of the period. The soft play...

Antique oil painting, Boy Fleaing a Dog, Gerard ter Borch, Dutch golden age
Located in DEVENTER, NL
Gerard ter Borch (II) (1617-1681), copy after, around 1700 'Boy Fleas a Dog' Oil on canvas Professionally restored (cleaned and relined) In modern frame in 17th century style Dimensions excl. frame: 33 x 27,5 cm. Dimensions incl. frame: approx. 50 x 45,5 cm. Depcited is a boy busy fleaing a dog. The boy sits on a chair with the dog on his lap. On a table on the right there is a book and a pen. On a wooden bench lies the boy's hat. What is unique about this painting by Ter Borch, is the relationship that is depicted between human and animal. Mostly animals like dogs where depicted as an attribute in paintings in the 17th century, and sometimes used to symbolize certain character traits. This boy is lovingly caring for his dog, which he is giving his full attention. Another interesting detail is that Ter Borch's brother Moses, was probably the model for this painting. Ter borch often used family members as models for his paintings. Moses was also a very talented painter and draughtsman. Several copies of this work by Ter Borch are known. One of these copies is in the collection of the Dutch Rijksmuseum (Image included in the image gallery (last image)). The original painting is in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek museum in Munich, Germany. Gerard ter Borch, also known as Gerard Terburg, was a Dutch genre painter who lived in the Dutch Golden Age. He influenced fellow Dutch painters Gabriel Metsu...
