About the Item

A magnificent 17th-century Italian painting. This artwork oil on canvas depicts a famous episode from the Iliad, the dispute between Agamemnon and Achilles over Briseis. During the Trojan War, the god Apollo had unleashed a plague among the Achaeans because Agamemnon refused to return Chryseis, the daughter of Chryses, the temple priest. To end the plague, the King of Mycenae was forced to return her to the Trojans, but decided to take Briseis, the spoils of war and Achilles' slave, as a consolation prize. The Greek hero, now fond of the girl, was outraged and withdrew from the fight, only returning to the battlefield after the death of Patroclus. On the left, we see Agamemnon with the scepter of command, on the right, the beautiful Briseis, while in the center we find an enraged Achilles. This painting, of remarkable pictorial quality, reveals the distinctive characteristics of Genoese painting and is attributed to the Baroque painter Valerio Castello (1624-1659). The swift and vibrant hand, the elongated bodies and warm colors, the luminous brushstrokes that illuminate the draperies. All these elements are attributable to the master, one of the great innovators of Genoese Baroque painting. (The painting is not currently accompanied by an expert opinion, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs.) A painting of ideal size, perfect for a prestigious setting, whether classic or contemporary. A Homeric page translated into painting with rare intensity, a refined work for a collector of mythological paintings. The 20th-century frame is in carved and lacquered wood, with various signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of the color in small spots. Overall, it is in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 89.5 x W 89.5 cm.
