About the Item

Pair Orientalist Watercolours Vittorio Rappini Italian Early 20th Century Italian, Early 20th Century Paper: Height 34cm, width 23cm Frame: Height 58.5cm, width 47.5cm, depth 3.5cm This distinguished pair of Orientalist watercolours by Vittorio Rappini (Italian, 1877–1939) reflects the artist’s refined approach to depicting Middle Eastern scholarly and architectural settings. Rappini was known for his meticulous draughtsmanship and beautifully balanced compositions, qualities that give these works an atmosphere of authenticity and calm introspection. In the first scene, two scholars sit in a richly adorned interior, absorbed in the study of religious manuscripts. Delicate architectural elements—such as tiled friezes, carved window grilles, and patterned carpets—are conveyed with clarity and measured colour, creating a tranquil environment. In the companion piece, a senior scholar exits a mosque accompanied by a younger attendant. The striped masonry, carved ornament, and soft courtyard light establish a dignified narrative that evokes respect and contemplation. Both watercolours are heightened with white, giving emphasis to textiles, architectural highlights, and facial expression. Rappini’s choice of subject matter—quiet academic exchange and the life of learned men—situates the pair within the most cultivated tradition of Orientalist art, distinct from more theatrical or exoticised imagery. Each work is signed ‘Rappini’ at the lower right. Housed in matching gilt frames with sympathetic mounts, the pair is visually cohesive and engaging as a set. Their intimate scale, fine detailing, and elegant colour harmonies make them an excellent addition to collections of Orientalist painting, early 20th-century Italian art, or works depicting Islamic architecture and scholarship.
