This exceptional oil on canvas, attributed to Wilhelm August Rudolf Lehmann (1819-1905), a British artist of German descent, depicts a tender exchange between a young shepherd and an attractive peasant girl at a mountain spring. The shy blush on the cheeks of both characters speaks only of their innocence and sincere feelings. The composition demonstrates the artist's remarkable skill with subtle modeling of forms through light and shadow.
