About the Item
Guatemalan Pottery Market is a 24 x 18 oil painting on canvas by William Kalwick. The artist travels frequently to paint in Antigua and the small villages in Guatemala. Each village is known by the huipil (blouses) that the women wear. Some men will wear pants in different colors. Framed 28 x 22.
Guatemalan pottery makers today use clay for their pottery.. The Highland of Guatemala has a rich geological history comprised mainly from a volcanic past. The metamorphic and igneous rock, as well as the sand and ash from the pumice areas provide many types of tempering. In the area, there are a range of clays that create varied colors and strengths when fired.
Today’s Maya locate their clays in the exposed river systems of the highland valleys. It is hypothesized that the ancient people obtained their clay by the same method as today’s Maya.
The clays are located in exposed river systems of the highland valleys. Most likely, due to the climatic similarities over the last millennia it is likely that these same deposits or similar ones could have been used in early times.

Nearly the entire population of the municipality is made up of ethnic K'iche' Maya who speak the K'iche' language. The population of the township is estimated to be between 50,000 and 85,000 individuals, about 10% of whom live in the head-town. Statistics vary widely because much of the township's territory and several large villages are also claimed by Nahualá' sister township, Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán.
