About the Item

Wolfgang Glechner (*1951) is a self-taught artist, who has been living in Vienna as a freelance artist since 1990. Since 1998 Glechner has been working in oils and acrylics according to his own developed "separation colour theory". The artist takes an emphatically down-to-earth view of urban life in his paintings and literary works. It is not the anonymity of the big city that appeals to Glechner, he is much more interested in the stories and characters of its protagonists - protagonists who tend not to be in the front row. Charming scenes in the ice cream shop or at the pet coiffeur's, overtaxed waiters at the buffet battle or the nice ladies at the busy cold call, immersed in colours that make even street art sprayers look pale. It is no coincidence that his most recent works, in which striking faces peer out of cars pulling up at the Gürtel, thematically quote the New Objectivity from Berlin in the 1920s. Glechner is particularly fond of the microcosm of Vienna's Gürtel. Like hardly any other contemporary, he manages to capture the atmosphere of the district on canvas. Time and again, he combines the pulsating outer ring into a compact world in which creativity and colourfulness triumph over the suburban triteness that is completely alien to Glechner. In Glechner's work, cars, people and animals are all on the same level on the Gürtel. Animals are also the starting point for the escape from urbanity. Glechner captures the prancing of elephants' fat buttocks at the city limits in Schönbrunn, which is intensified by the shimmering colourfulness. Even before Glechner started writing, he was already telling stories - with the means of painting. The all-too-real everyday life is given a garish coat of paint and thus invites us into a parallel universe in which there is a tongue-in-cheek punchline at the end.

Movement
By Walter Strobl
Located in Wien, 9
Walter Strobl opens a new chapter in his explorations of the neverending tension between stillness and movement. Strobl´s vibrant nudes capture women in movement: they are there and gone again, letting the pictoral space pulsate with both the presence and absence of the outlines of their bodies. He paints women with a keen interest in the lived experience of the body, avoiding clichees in his depictions. The viewer is excluded from this inner sensation, but it is precisely the privacy of the model`s slumber that permits us to revel in our own proprioception. His cityscapes and still lives tell their...

Harlequin s Golden Collar: Contemporary Figurative Mixed Media Painting
By Sax Berlin
Located in Brecon, Powys
The latest rendition of Sax Berlin's interpretation of Harlequin. A beautiful piece evocative of medieval wall art where Harlequin wears his traditional hat, often shown in the modern world to have belonged to jesters but is really an allusion to the diamond pattern associated with Harlequin. There may also be a hidden reference to Picasso here; in Guernica Picasso...
