La Place Blanche (The Moulin Rouge) is a serene and atmospheric painting by Yves Ganne (French, 1931–2019), executed in oil on canvas and signed and inscribed on the reverse. Measuring 50 x 61 cm, the work comes directly from the estate of the artist. The composition captures a calm scene in front of the iconic Moulin Rouge in Paris, with figures moving across the square. Ganne’s characteristic interplay of colour, light, and structure imbues the work with both urban vibrancy and painterly elegance, reflecting his keen eye for composition and his ability to convey mood through dynamic forms.
Born in Angers, Anjou, in 1931, Yves Ganne studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes and later under Fernand Léger in Paris. He first received critical recognition at the Prix de la Jeune Peinture exhibition in 1950, winning the Prix de la Ville de Menton that same year. Ganne’s early Paris exhibitions at Drouant David (1954 and 1957), as well as shows in London at Tooth and Sons and in numerous group exhibitions across Europe, established him as a significant post-war French painter.
Renowned for his vividly coloured landscapes, still lifes, and figurative works, Ganne’s paintings are held in major public collections including the French Government, the City of Paris, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. La Place Blanche exemplifies Ganne’s mastery of urban scenes, combining narrative charm, compositional clarity, and a sophisticated use of colour to evoke the spirit of Parisian life.

Yves Ganne
Yves Ganne was born in Angers, Anjou, France in July of 1931. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts of Nantes and with Fernand Léger in Paris. Ganne first received critical notice at the exhibition of the “Prix de la Jeune Peinture” in 1950 and was awarded the Prix de la Ville de Menton in the same year. He is listed in the French-language Benezit Dictionary of Artists as School of Paris. Ganne had his first Paris exhibition in 1954 at Drouant David's, where he exhibited again in 1957. He exhibited in London at Tooth and Son's and in several group shows in France and abroad. Ganne's vividly colored landscapes and still life pieces have been acquired by the French government, the City of Paris and the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris.
