About the Item
A second 4 is a unique painting by contemporary artist Hongyu Zhang. The painting is made with India ink, acrylic, pastel and engraving on grey cardboard mounted on canvas, dimensions are 92 × 60 cm (36.2 × 23.6 in). Dimensions of the framed artwork are 97 x 65 cm (38.1 x 25.5 in).
The artwork is signed, sold framed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Indian ink is still a favourite medium for Hongyu Zhang, whose paintings have roots in calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting. He uses it today along with various techniques to experiment with new artistic trends. He draws the portrait's outlines, colours the expansive areas, and shapes the face using shadows and lights by dipping a thick brush into various ink dilutions for various shades of grey.
It is more important for the artist to interpret and express a feeling (such as determination, introspection, or weariness) than it is to accurately portray the features of a face. This is because the artist wants to capture the intimate essence of his subject. Hongyu Zhang created fictional characters that are, in essence, self-portraits.

Zhang Hongyu
Hongyu Zhang’s artworks take root in calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting. The line creates the fundamental unity of all his works, particularly his portraits, which have a striking expressive power. The artist draws them on different mediums placed directly on the floor, with music helping him to find the strength, rhythm and movement of each work. He creates an energetic space that attracts and captivates, inviting us to decipher the artist’s nervous writing, which seems to have been invented to understand the depths of the soul. “For me, a work is the meeting between a subject and the artist’s thoughts, his experiences. It is about giving an impression, translating a feeling... This approach is central to the aesthetic system of traditional Chinese painting: it is more about expressing a sensation than painting a reality.’’
