About the Item
Florentine painter, 16th-17th century
Saint John the Baptist
Oil on canvas 67 x 56 cm - In frame 98 x 83 cm
In bringing out the sculptural figure of this young Saint John the Baptist, bathed in a powerful and enveloping light, our artist seems to refer directly to the Gospel of John, which outlines the role of the Baptist as prophet and precursor of Jesus Christ: ‘There came a man sent from God, whose name was John ... to bear witness to the light. He was not the light, but he came to bear witness to the light.’ (Jn 1:6-8)
Aware of this mission, the saint is depicted radiating a beam of light coming from a tear in the clouds, wrapped in the traditional camel-skin garment and a bright red cloak; with one hand he holds the traditional staff made of two reeds forming a crucifix, alluding to Christ's sacrifice on the cross.
The work can be attributed to an artist active between the 16th and 17th centuries in Florence, where the figurative tradition has always devoted considerable space to this subject, patron saint of the city and protector of various arts and crafts guilds.
Although his interpretation is very personal, we can easily identify the models from which he drew inspiration and, in particular, trace his origins to the school of Andrea del Sarto (Florence 1486 - 1530), finding the most striking points of contact with the series of saints portrayed by the painter in half-length figures.
These include the portrait of the young John the Baptist by Andrea del Sarto, now in the Worcester Art Museum (Massachusetts), but above all, as regards the rendering of the features of the face and body, we can compare it with Saint Sebastian, in particular the copy in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen in France (1). (1) (Andrea del Sarto (follower) - Saint Sebastian holding two arrows and the palm of martyrdom (detail) Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen (Référence 06570005015)
In this last painting, we find the beautiful head of the boy, with his gaze fixed upwards, his flowing curly hair standing out, and his lean but harmonious, almost ephebe-like naked body, with a posture that is both proud and relaxed, evoking Raphael's David.
Although it is not easy to identify the hand of a particular artist within the prolific school of the master, the painting on offer occupies a prominent place due to its noble Florentine workmanship, which is evident in the confidence of the drawing, the mastery of the anatomical structure, the plasticity of the figure and the delicate vagueness of the saint's expression, all of which make it a very interesting work.

Saint John Evangelist Paint Oil on canvas Old master 18th Century French School
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Saint John the Evangelist
French school of the eighteenth century
Oil painting on canvas
82 x 64 cm. - in frame 102 x 84 cm.
In this pleasant painting we see the portrait of the evangelist John, holding a pen in his hand while writing the pages of the Gospel, while behind him it is possible to recognize the profile of an eagle, his typical iconographic attribute.
The graceful face, which still reveals the devout attitude, which gives the painting a more intimate and delicate, not excessive religiosity, is one of the typical characteristics for works intended for domestic devotion, as in the case of this Saint John.
From the representation of the Saint the freshness of his features immediately stands out, he is in fact portrayed as young and handsome: and it is precisely this iconographic peculiarity that makes the work fascinating and very pleasant, probably commissioned for a private room.
The painting presents the peculiarities of eighteenth-century French portraiture, characterized by a soft drawing and a wise use of light. The rather marked chiaroscuro and well-calibrated shades produce an excellent result thanks to the play of light on the face, highlighted by the dark background of the scene.
The painting has been relined and is in an excellent state of conservation with the colors still bright and a very healthy pictorial layer.
The painting is sold together with a nice golden frame.

Inscribed: „Ferrau Fenzonio da Faenza invt. esque … imp. da Fran. Villamena …“.

On the reverse is a partial drawing of a Pieta, pricked for transfer.
Provenance
New York, Doyle, 14. October 2015, No. 6
The painting and the preparatory drawing resemble the composition of an engraving after Ferraù Fenzoni by Francesco Villamena. Drawing, engraving and painting are almost identical, except for minor differences. Even the measurements nearly correspond: painting (32 x 25,5 cm), drawing (30 x 20,5 cm), engraving (31,1 x 23,5 cm).
Dr. Guiseppe Scavizzi confirmed the attribution of the present panting to Fenzoni and he dates it to c. 1590.
The inscription on the drawing reads “Ferrau Fenzonio da Faenza invt. esque. . . imp. da Fran: Villamena . . .”. The engraving’s inscription also lists place and date “Ferra Fensionius inventor/F. Villamoena sculpsit Rome/Aspectu fruitur… antra puer/cum Privilegio… 1613”.
Interestingly, the engraving is not mirrored as it is in most printing processes. Painting, drawing and engraving are not reversed but the same. It is remarkable to note that there are further paintings by Fenzoni which were engraved in the same order and not reverted. They also show strong parallels regarding the compositions and the measurements (see for example “Deposition of Christ” ).
Ferraù Fenzoni was an Italian painter mainly active in Todi. He is also called Il Faenzone after his birthplace (Faenza). He apprenticed in Rome during the papacy of Gregory XIII and contributed to numerous fresco cycles under pope Sixtus V, such as the Loggia della Benedizioni in the Lateran Palace, the frescoes on the walls and vaults of the Scala Santa of the adjacent Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, and the decoration in the Sistine library. His expressive canvases straddle the styles of Mannerism and Baroque. In 1594, he moved to Todi. A “Last Judgement” by him is housed in the cathedral of Todi. He returned to Faenza in 1599, where he decorated chapels in the cathedral from 1612 to 1616. In 1622, he completed a “Deposition”, now in the local Pinacoteca. In 1640, Fenzoni was named “cavaliere dello speron d’oro” by Cardinal Colonna and, on 25th April 1634, he was nominated vicar and “castellano of Granarolo”.
Fenzoni‘s style is characterized by a mixture of the Mannerism of the Northern Netherlands and the Italian Baroque.
