Christ in the Garden of Olives (or Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane) attributable to Frans Francken II (Antwerp 1581 - 1642) Late 16th - early 17th century oil on copper cm. 30 x 23, framed 54 x 46 The valuable painting in question, depicting Christ in the garden of Gethsemane, is a work attributable to the Flemish Frans Francken II (Antwerp 1581 - 1642). The work interprets an episode included in the New Testament, in which Jesus, at the end of the Last Supper with his apostles, retires to pray in the garden of Gethsemane, a farm located on the Mount of Olives, outside the walls of the holy city of Jerusalem. The composition focuses on the figure of Christ, represented kneeling with arms outstretched and extended in a gesture of acceptance of the imminent sacrifice, with the angel who hands him the chalice, a metaphor of the Passion, radiated by a luminous beam of divine light, which it spreads to the entire composition. While three of his faithful apostles have stretched out to rest, Jesus is absorbed in prayer; in the distance you can see the array of armed soldiers, led by the traitor Judas, sent by the high priests to arrest him. In the foreground on the right is Peter, the oldest apostle, flanked by James the Greater behind him and John the Evangelist, the favorite of the apostles, recognizable by his iridescent red robes. The scene, which opens the sequence of the Passion, emphasizing the humanity of Christ, is transformed here into a phantasmagoria of colors, lit by the supernatural light of the angel. The brilliance of the execution is linked to the use of warm and bold colors and the representation of characters in graceful poses is depicted according to the mannerist taste of the time. The work, of evident Flemish origin, is part of the production between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries of the Antwerp school and in particular is part of the production of the prolific workshop of the Francken, a famous family of Antwerp painters who for four generations held a predominant role in art local. In particular, based on the characters of style and composition, they are inclined to link the authorship to Frans Francken II (Antwerp 1581-1642), even if there are some points of contact with his son, Frans Francken III (Antwerp 1607 -1667). The painting is superbly decorative, of excellent executive quality and characterized by a luminous design and a lively and brilliant chromatism, highlighted by the particular copper support. The lines are highlighted by a vigorous design, with a rather marked play of light and dark. The work is completed by a beautiful gilded wooden frame.
