About the Item

A feast of rich colours and dynamic form, this intriguing contemporary painting is by Gary Evans. For more than two decades, the Canadian artist has explored a unique visual narrative that is inspired and informed by the natural world. This is a landscape re-imagined using both abstraction and realism. The colour palette is a sumptuous medley of green, yellow, blue, melon, burgundy, turquoise, aubergine, gray, black and white. Expressive brushstrokes, lyrical markings, and organic shapes mingle to encircle a view of a pastoral countryside framed by a pale blue and cloud-filled sky. “My interest in the organic interaction of shape, space and form, interior and exterior is a way to talk about the nature of cognition and consciousness that we all experience.” Gary Evans “Evans has presented himself in show after show as an inventive colourist possessed by an equally inventive take on landscape painting. That often results in scenes of confounding density, which, with observer patience, settle into rich, combinative sequences of descriptive paint that pay homage to landscape in terms of not just spatial experience, but also in terms of accrued personal memory and passing real-time.” Richard Rhodes, Arts Writer/Editor Gary Evans was born in England. He studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design. He is the Coordinator of the Georgian College Fine Arts program in Barrie, ON. His own art practice is robust; he has had dozens of solo exhibitions throughout Canada and Europe. His paintings have been widely collected in Canada both privately and publicly including the Museum London in London, Ontario and The Art Gallery of Kelowna, BC.

A Country Like You (Le Pays Qui te Ressemble) - abstract, acrylic on canvas
Located in Bloomfield, ON
This lyrical, colourful abstract painting is by Canadian visual artist Richard Tosczak- one in a series created in collaboration with an Italian artist, Angela Letizia Renzi, a lover of literature and linguistics. In this dynamic composition, expressive, gestural lines and swaths of colour—yellow, green, turquoise, white, melon and brown flow across the canvas. Tosczak is perhaps best known for his beautiful bronze figurative sculptures. This painting was inspired by a poem entitled ‘L’invitation au voyage” written by C. Baudelaire, a famous French poet. ‘Au pays qui te ressemble’ means ‘the country that resembles you’. “The collaboration, which has its beginnings in the picturesque setting of Lake Como, continues, more productive than ever, on an island in the heart of the Mediterranean animated by the tide, the motion of the waves, the active volcano Etna and tales of local mythology.” Tosczak and Renzi Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium. He studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...
