Giovanni Cassana received his earliest training from his father and his brother who was then a well-known portrait painter and from Jacob van de Kerkhoven, an acclaimed Flemish animal painter who lived in Venice. Cassana began his career painting portraits and later became more specialized in still life paintings of game and hunting. He may have abandoned portraiture in order to distinguish himself from his brother but also certainly because in Genoa still life paintings were more widely sought after than any other subject. In Genoa he met and was highly influenced by Giovanni Castiglione, called it Grechetto. In 1711, he became a member of the painter’s guild in Venice and shortly thereafter moved to Genoa.
In our piece Two Tortoiseshell Guinea Pigs, Cassana has depicted two guinea pigs sitting in close proximity to each other, their heads almost touching, living the piece with an air of intimacy. One of them is busying itself, chewing on a straw, looking straight at the beholder, while the other guinea pig is turned towards its better half. Cassana skillfully brings the featured guinea pigs to life with their highly engaging expressions. The color scheme is relatively limited. Set against a dark background, the guinea pigs stand out. The fur around their heads is held in a sparkling white color that creates a beautiful contrast to the background. Cassana’s many renderings of are characterized by their high quality, and as it is the case in our alluring piece, he demonstrates great attention to detail in the execution of the guinea pigs’ fur. In addition, attention to detail such as the whiskers and soft nose of the guinea pigs, contributes to the overall endearing quality of this painting.

Herman Ten Kate spent most of his life in The Hague although he did occasionally travel to Amsterdam and Haarlem. He was a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam in 1847. He was a student of Cornelis Krusemans from 1837 to 1841. Ten Kate generally depicted friendly genre scenes as well as scenes with soldiers inspired by the 80 years war. His work is generally of watercolor and lithographs.
Our sheet offers a quiet scene in which two gentlemen are featured, each sporting the extravagant hats, vests and tall boots typical of the 19th century, inspired by the 17th century Guardroom scenes. One man rests against the back of a chair, his face marked with a serious expression, his left hand gesturing toward the other man seated at the table. The seated figure wears a rather bemused expression as he composes a letter, apparently taking delight in his endeavor. The two figures are surrounded by various objects cluttering the room, which Ten Kate employs for the specific means of compositional balance.

Giovanni Agostino Cassana (c.1658 – 6 May 1720) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. He was a son of Giovanni Francesco Cassana and an elder brother of Niccolò and Giovanni Battista. He was born at Venice, and was initially instructed by his father. In 1670 he worked at the court of Ferdinando de' Medici in Florence and travelled regularly between the two cities, but spent at least the years 1718–1720 in Genoa, where he later died. He painted portraits with some success, but preferred painting animals in the style of Antonio Maria Vasallo, Benedetto Castiglione, and Joannes Fyt, a style which he learned from Jacques van de Kerckhove...
