About the Item
A heartwarming oil interior scene by the British painter, Fanny Mearns. The scene shows the rustic interior of a farmhouse kitchen. The father has seated himself in a chair, still holding his crop, after a day's work, driving a carriage or cart. He holds a jug of ale, ready to pour it into the glass his wife holds on a tray. She has her other arm wrapped around their young child, who's bare feet rest upon the wooden table. A disgruntled cat sits at their feet, his empty saucer before him. The scene is filled with wholesome, domestic happiness, the modest home filled with personal belongings. The artist has employed the Romantic view that many held, of rural life during this era.
Â
The artist has signed and dated to the lower left corner and the painting is presented in a contemporary gilt effect frame with ribbed cove and foliate strapwork.

Out of Mischief - British Victorian 1891 art interior portrait oil painting
Located in Hagley, England
This absolutely charming exhibited British Victorian oil painting is by female artist Maria Louisa Angus. Painted in 1891, it was exhibited at the Royal Academy that same year. The composition is an interior scene with two young girls on a sofa, looking at a picture book and keeping 'out of mischief' as it is entitled. The room holds an exotic mix of oriental objects and a gorgeous umbrella plant in a gleaming terracotta pot. The girls themselves are sat on a beautifully detailed fur throw, looking at a book, with a marine painting on the wall behind them. The brushwork and colouring are superb and the pink of the older girl's dress is picked up throughout the room. A really lovely painting by a very talented Victorian female artist.

19th Century genre oil painting of a woman
child in a Welsh cottage
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Alfred Provis
British, (1818-1890)
By the Fireside
Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1869
Image size: 10.5 inches x 15.5 inches
Size including frame: 21.5 inches x 26.5 inches
This charming cottage scene by Alfred Provis features a woman preparing supper by a fire with her young daughter. As the mother peels the turnips and places them in the pot, the girl’s attention is drawn to the kitten feeding from a saucer. The dress and hat of the woman bears a similarity to those found Provis’s other scenes of Welsh cottage interiors. The artist was known to have visited North Wales around the time this painting was produced. In 1869, he exhibited a work entitled ‘Interior of a Welsh Farmhouse’ at the Royal Society of British Artists. Given the level of detail in the painting and the fact that it is in such an impressive original frame, it is possible this is the same painting as the one exhibited.
Alfred Provis was a genre painter born on 18 February, 1818 in Chippenham, Wiltshire. He was the son of John Provis, a timber merchant and his second wife Ann Banks. He spent time in London being tutored by the historical and portrait artist John Wood (1801-1870) before returning to Chippenham. He began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1843, continuing to exhibit there regularly until 1886. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1846 with a work entitled ‘A Cottage Door...
