About the Item

Eighteenth Century English Country Inn Scene with Rustic Figures and Dog, drinking and talking. A signed Oil on Canvas mounted on stretchers and Framed in a Morland Frame. This was once the property of the eminent British Surgeon Sir Geoffrey Keynes, also famous for being patron of the William Blake Society. Time to settle the Bill" by George Morland (1763-1804) Oil on Canvas, Signed and Framed 20 by 22 inches George Morland the famed Eighteenth Century Painter is best known for his compositions that focus on rustic characters, farming, smugglers and gypsies, informed by the Dutch tradition. As famous for his dissolute lifestyle as much as his genius. Morland was a heavy drinker and despite his great success he had many troubles and much of his later years were marred by debt and he spent time in a debtor's prison. His father initially cultivated his prodigious talents, indeed it could be said he took great advantage of him. There is little doubt that from the earliest years he showed great talent and all through his life painted prolifically. He often tossed out a painting in the day to support an evening's drinking and was a great favourite with the Dealers for both the quality of his work and eagerness. It was often said that dealers approached him with money in one hand and a bottle in the other!

"Flemish genre tavern scene"
Located in Edinburgh, GB
Unidentified Artist 17th-Century Tavern Scene Oil on canvas Framed: 113 x 103 cm Canvas: 96 x 91 cm This 17th-century oil painting captures a lively tavern scene, a popular subject in Dutch and Flemish genre painting of the Golden Age. The composition is rich in character and storytelling, depicting a group of men engaged in a card game, with coins, letters, and drinks scattered across the table. A standing woman, possibly a barmaid or concerned onlooker, leans in, while a man enters from the left, holding his hat and appearing amused by the game. In the foreground, a small child tends to a jug and tankard, adding a touch of humor and domestic realism. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting showcases earthy, warm tones and rich chiaroscuro, emphasizing the candlelit glow of the scene. The artist masterfully captures the textures of fabrics, wood, and metal, giving depth and dimension to the environment. The expressive faces and animated gestures highlight the social interactions typical of Dutch and Flemish tavern paintings...
