About the Item

Antwerp school Attributed to Gerard Thomas (Antwerp 1663-1720) with the collaboration of Balthazar van den Bossche (Antwerp 1681-1715) The doctor's office Gerard Thomas was a late Flemish Baroque painter who specialized in studio and gallery interiors. He became master of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1688-89 and was dean twice. Around 1700 he specialized in interior painting, inspired by the works of David Teniers and interior views of the studios of doctors, artists, alchemists, apothecaries, geographers and philosophers. This theme is influenced by a tradition of Antwerp amateur cabinets, a sort of private museum of wealthy Flemish merchants. He also studied as an alchemist, and this interest inspired him to create some of his most remarkable works. While his predecessors preferred more or less close framing, in order to privilege figures rather than environments, Thomas distances the point of view by attaching great importance to the environment and especially to the very numerous objects contained therein, painted in great richness of detail, from the ever-precious globe, almost his signature, to the common broom, from glazed earthenware vases to glass bulbs, from stills to ancient parchment-bound volumes, via tools and the most varied containers of everyday use. The effects of light on different materials-glass, copper, silver, pewter-were studied... His subjects were often misunderstood, simplified by the reductive appellation "quack" or "alchemist." In fact, his paintings often use actual clinics in which the doctor, with apprentices and helpers, plied his trade, depicted with great realism and precision. It is no coincidence that some of his paintings are part of the collection of Sir Henry Wellcome (1853-1936), a British pharmaceutical magnate and founder of the Wellcome Foundation, an avid collector of objects related to the sciences of medicine as well as art and healing. over the centuries. Balthazar van den Bossche was a pupil of Gerard Thomas, master of the Antwerp guild since 1697. Like his master he specialized in interior painting but, thanks to a period spent with his own studio in Paris , aware of the prevailing market preference for French art, he adapted his Flemish style to conform to Parisian tastes. The subjects remained very similar to those of the master but he refined his manner of painting, particularly the portraits, which were strongly influenced by the style of Coypel and Watteau. Our painting actually blends the skills of the two painters, as was often the case in Flanders where several workers could participate in a single painting, each according to his or her specialization. Thomas painted the backgrounds, furnishings, and objects: one recognizes the brownish-brown background typical of the painter with light coming in through a window on the left, illuminating a scene filled with objects: the table covered in Flemish cloth with elaborate embroidery, the dishes, branches, stills, tools, and the ever-present little dog. Van den Bossche painted the characters, from the doctor to the young woman to the little girl. One can compare this painting with another version, preserved in the Royal Museum in Antwerp and painted entirely by Thomas: one will notice how Thomas interprets the characters in a distinctly Flemish manner while one will recognize his hand in the globe, the furnishings, the crockery... The painting is in excellent condition. It has an 18th-century Italian lacquered and gilded wooden frame. It comes from the collection of an Italian doctor. The painting is ready to be hung on the wall. It is accompanied by the Italian Fine Arts export certificate so it can be shipped immediately. We personally take care of the packaging to ensure the highest quality standard. The painting will be packed in a wooden crate tailored for artwork.

Knight Van Douw Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17/18th Century Flemish Art Italy
By Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677)
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
After Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677) The stop of a traveler on horseback near a post station Oil painting on canvas 45 x 55 cm In frame cm. 55 x 65 In this pleasant painting, depicting a knight parked near a post station, the Flemish tradition is based on a strong Italianizing sensitivity, especially by observing the setting and its peculiar brightness. The mixture of genres and the particular style of execution make it easy to trace the authorship back to a Nordic author but active in Rome, or strongly influenced by the style in vogue in the Eternal city, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: we are referring, in in particular, to a follower of the Antwerp Simon Johannes van Douw. The chromatic elegance and refinement with which he outlines the figures are typical aspects of his painting. The scene takes place outside a cottage, probably a post office for travelers, where a modest family divides the tasks by assisting the knights. We see a young boy who hands water to the horse before he sets off again, the father is preparing to feed him with straw and the mother who instead takes care of the little son. The Italian reminiscences, evident in our painting, have been absorbed by many Northern European authors such as Nicolaes Berchem, Philips Wouwerman or Johannes Lingelbach, all inspired by the leader Pieter van Laer...
