About the Item

16, Clare Street Acrylic on Canvas 34.5 x 26.5 cm 16 Clare Street II presents a modern cubist interior scene set inside the premises at 16 Clare Street in Dublin—an address long associated with the city’s literary life. From 1843 to 2007, the building housed Greene’s Bookshop, one of Dublin’s most renowned independent bookshops, frequented by generations of readers and writers, including figures such as Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, and Oscar Wilde. Now home to design and garden retailer Howbert Mays, the space was chosen by Grégoire Mathias to host his first Irish exhibition in 2024. Located at the heart of Dublin’s Joycean landmarks, the site offered a way for the artist to honour his connection to Joyce, as his exploration of time through diachronic cubism—centred on layering successive moments within a single composition—echoes Joyce’s own non-linear treatment of time and perception. The painting focuses on the interior of the space, structuring architectural elements, artworks, and human presence into interlocking planes that preserve recognisable features while reconfiguring them through colour and geometry. A palette of greens, ochres, blues, and soft pinks reflects the space’s botanical and design-led character, while remaining integrated into the overall structure rather than functioning decoratively. Rather than presenting a fixed viewpoint, the composition allows multiple perspectives to coexist, creating a subtle impression of movement, as if the scene were assembled across successive instants rather than held in a single, static view. A figure descending the staircase functions as a discreet clin d’œil to the artist’s assistant, drawn from Mathias’s working environment while preparing the exhibition. This understated human presence grounds the work in lived familiarity without anchoring it to a specific moment or event. At its intimate scale, 16 Clare Street II offers a focused entry into Mathias’s Irish works, balancing abstraction and legibility to capture the character of a culturally charged interior—one shaped by memory, repetition, and the passage of time. Perfect For: 1-Collectors - Modern and contemporary Dublin interiors and city-based works - Cubist interpretations of real places with cultural and artistic context 2-Interior Designers Architects - Will anchor or highlight interiors built around neutral, natural, or muted colour palettes, including whites, soft greys, stone tones, warm woods, and botanical greens - Complements modern and contemporary furniture, and introduces contrast within restrained or classic interiors - Well suited to smaller spaces, studies, stairwells, or curated wall groupings where a compact, high-impact scene is desired Keywords: Greg Mathias, Dublin interior painting, Irish urban interior, cubist interior scene, modern Dublin art, Clare Street Dublin, contemporary city interior, European cubist painting, Irish exhibition artwork, architectural abstraction. About the artist: Grégoire Mathias, graduate of ENSBA Paris, is a pioneer of Diachronic Cubism, an evolution of Cubism that captures movement and time within a single frame. His works have been exhibited at Sotheby’s Périgueux, and galleries in Paris, New York, and Dublin. Since 2020, Mathias has designed posters for the United Nations (WFUNA), making him the first French artist to do so since Picasso, Chagall, and Miró. San Marco, Venice — Cubist Italian Cityscape Painting in Blue and Ochre, Acrylic
Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR
San Marco, Venise Acrylic on Canvas 60 x 49 cm Signed lower right and on the reverse In San Marco, Venise, Grégoire Mathias translates the timeless elegance of Venice’s architecture into his distinctive language of Diachronic Cubism — a style that captures not only multiple spatial perspectives but also the passage of time within a single composition. The familiar arches and reflections of the Venetian lagoon dissolve into an intricate interplay of geometric planes and shifting tones of turquoise, ivory, and sand. The result is a composition that feels both architectural and fluid — an echo of light dancing on water, where memory and presence coexist. Mathias’s mastery lies in how he balances structure and emotion, transforming an iconic cityscape into a meditation on rhythm, space, and movement. Perfect For: Collectors of modern Cubism • Venice and Italy enthusiasts • Contemporary interiors with neutral or coastal tones • Living rooms or entryways seeking architectural depth and movement Collector’s Insight: This painting belongs to Mathias’s Venetian Series, where he explores the interplay between history and modernity through cubist fragmentation. Its soothing palette and elegant balance make it a perfect statement for collectors drawn to contemporary reinterpretations of classic European subjects.
