About the Item

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1891, John Gilmore Wolcott graduated from Harvard in 1914 and continued studies in art with Charles Woodbury. He was active in the Boston art scene for decades. In 1944, Wolcott became president of the James McNeill Whistler House Museum in nearby Lowell. He served as such at the Museum until 1951. Primarily a painter of portraits and landscapes, John Wolcott also honed his planning skills at the Whistler Museum. He exhibited at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, Vose Galleries in Boston and the Rockport and Gloucester Art Associations. The Whistler Museum owns two of his paintings. This interior scene features sitter “Miss Elizabeth Talbot” positioned near a large window with a view to the outside. It’s a bright New England winter day outside, and Wolcott brings that light and freshness inside. Miss Talbot, knitting, is surrounded by fine furnishings. Wolcott’s ability to render impressionist winter landscapes is in contrast with the more realistically painted interior and sitting subject. Signed and dated 1922 lower right, the painting preserves the sense of culture that was fashionable over 100 years ago. The painting is oil on canvas and measures 22” x 24”. It is in very good condition with no significant issues to report. The frame is original to the work and has some interesting detailing. It, too, is in very good condition with only very minor age related issues in a few spots. The overall measurements of the framed painting are 26” x 28”, approximately.

Fine Impressionist American School Oil on Canvas; Family Picnic or Outing, 1925
Located in Baltimore, MD
This lovely impressionist painting portrays what appears to be a family outing or picnic. There are many beautifully dressed women with their children in a park setting. Oddly, what appears to be missing are men, or their husbands. Perhaps it’s a women’s organization that included their young children. The scene must depict late spring or summer, given the foliage and their beautiful dresses. The colors are bright and cheerful and the late impressionist style is clearly evident. The artist appears to have signed the painting lower left, but it is very difficult to completely decipher. The date, 1925, seems to be clearer. All in all, this work is a one-of-a-kind period painting that will enhance any sophisticated room or setting. The frame is a soft lemon gold period cove frame that may be just a bit older than the work by about 10 years. This work has been recently professionally repaired, cleaned and varnished. Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition. There are a few professional repairs to the canvas, only visible from the patches shown on the backside. The frame has a few minor blemishes here and there, expected with its age. The canvas measures 18” x 22” and the overall framed dimensions are 24 1/2” x 28 1/2”. Visible on the reverse side is a vintage label that reads “Art...
