This expressive scene rendered in bold, juicy brush strokes of impasto oil paint, captures a cozy, warm interior scene, the artist, Marcus Hodge's home in Monaco. The room is bathed in an intimate, low light, with a comfortable-looking, cream-colored sofa on the left, strewn with a colorful throw pillows. Above the sofa hangs a large, painting featuring broad strokes of blue and green that depict a duck on water. This painting within a painting references wildlife art created by the painter's father, Spencer Hodge. To the right, an open doorway reveals a midnight blue, outdoor evening scene with distant, sparkling lights. Born in Sussex in 1966, Marcus Hodge earned a degree in Economics from Queen Mary's College, London University in 1989. He then worked his passage round the Mediterranean on Prince Furstenberg of Germany's boat. Then, he moved to Kentucky, USA, to work on a horse farm.
Marcus decided to study art full time in 1989 and began a rigorous five-year training as an oil painter. He studied under the Spanish National Treasure, Juaquin Torrents Llado, one of Spain's most prominent portrait painters, at Esquela Libre del Mediterraneo in Palma, Mallorca. The school takes the traditional approach to teaching oil painting: "a al prima", which includes proportion, light and dark, still life. and portraiture. In 1993, Marcus became the the third person to be invited to remain as a teacher since its foundation in 1968. However, following the death of his tutor, Hodge left the school in 1994 to develop his work freely.
Marcus works in oil, charcoal, and watercolor. His Subjects include landscapes, seascapes, horses, architecture, and portraits.
