William J. Schultz, American (1919 - 2005) William J. "Bill" Schultz had been a renowned American Impressionist artist and teacher for over sixty-five years. Co-Founder, and Director of the AIS had inspired numerous professional artists and teachers through his teaching. He also was a Master Pastelist in the Pastel Society of America and had won many awards for his oil and pastel paintings. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1919, he died in Vero Beach, Florida in 2005. He served in the Army in World War II including duty in Europe. He was discharged in 1946 with rank of First Sergeant. Schultz began his art studies with Martin C. Hoy, a fine artist and student of Robert Henri and William M. Chase. He graduated from The Vesper George School Of Art in Boston, Massachusetts in 1949. He then studied under National Academicians Jerry Farnsworth, Ivan Olinsky (a student of John Singer Sargent) and Robert Brackman. Winner of many awards for oil and pastel works. Was a noted portrait artist. He was a founding Director of the American Impressionist Society and an award winning member of the Pastel Society Of America. He studied under notable National Academicians Robert Brachman, Ivan Olinsky and Jerry Farnsworth. Schultz opened his own art studio and school in Lenox, Massachusetts and taught impressionist painting to hundreds of students, some of whom are now nationally recognized themselves. After 25 years at that location Schultz and his wife moved to Vero Beach, Florida where he continued to teach, as well as provide lectures and exhibitions around the country. Illustrated articles about Schultz and his work have appeared in "American Artist", "Southwest Profiles", "Artists Of Florida" and other periodicals. For a short time he studied alongside Norman Rockwell at a studio in Stockbridge, Massachusetts where Rockwell had established the base for his illustration work. Schultz was the proud possessor of an autographed sketch of himself that Norman Rockwell had created and was signed by Rockwell. Catherine Pennington-Meyer is available at Wychwood Art online and in our gallery. Catherine is an award-winning artist who currently lives and works near Munich, in Germany. Her work concentrates primarily on abstract expressionism. Catherine has participated in exhibitions throughout Europe and has quickly established a prestigious international collector base. Catherine says of her art: `I see my painting as a kind of language, translating what I feel or experience to those viewing it. I am innately drawn to create raw, emotive, expressionist pieces, mostly abstracts, which distil a subject down to its feeling. I don`t only want my art to be `beautiful` but for it to reach out and touch the person who is viewing it on an immediate, intuitive level. I want my paintings to speak to their audience in their own visceral language. I am influenced by nature, particularly the multifaceted nature of water, and memories of growing up in particularly beautiful landscapes in North Yorkshire and Scotland. I also find human psychology and science fascinating. But I see compositions everywhere, whether it be flowers in a park, the way smoke curls, books on a library shelf or a street market. Everything is made up of shapes and colours. The world is a constant source influences and inspiration.’ Over time, as her work has developed, she has been increasingly compelled towards abstraction, through which she feels able to communicate an energy which is untethered by the constraints of realism. She enjoys playing with light, depth and movement in her art to give it immediacy and to draw a viewer into the composition. Deborah grew up in the Kent countryside surrounded by animals and nature and started painting with her mother who was a portrait painter at a very young age. After art college Deborah co-founded a ran a successful ceramic design business in Portobello Road, London, designing, making and selling contemporary ceramics and undertaking commissions for well know media clients. Moving back to Kent in her thirties Deborah taught art and returning to painting, her first love, developed her still-life painting style. Deborah works in oil and acrylics building up her paintings with layers and washes to achieve depth and richness. Pattern, texture, decoration, shapes and colour are all important elements in her work. Working from life is vital to Deborah so that she can capture the essence of her subject. Jugs and vases spill over with fresh flowers and she will often paint part of one of her abstract paintings in the background to add an extra element to the composition.
