About the Item

Artist Comments
The south side of town feels like a place time forgot. Its worn charm is part of the appeal. The South Side Diner has stood on the corner since the 1940s, beloved by generations for its great food at a fair price. Step inside and you’re transported to a simpler time, where warmth, comfort, and good company were the usual. On a cold, wet day, it’s the perfect refuge.

About the Artist
Artist Mitchell Freifeld depicts architecture that evokes memory and nostalgia. Using a modernist approach, he highlights details that often fade into the background of familiarity. With his camera, he meticulously documents the world around him, using his shots as a reference for his art. "My works are the product of a process that is more intuitive than intellectual and a passion for simple, modern architecture and light," says Mitchell. After winning his first juried show at 10, Mitchell's lifelong dream of becoming a full-time artist took root. A pivotal moment in 2001 prompted him to seize the chance and devote himself to art-making. Now, he dedicates most of his time to a compact studio within his garage in Portland, Oregon. Mitchell's life revolves entirely around his creative pursuits, taking pictures, and working seven days a week with paints and brushes.

This painting of a train's interior invites the viewer on a journey to the Austrian Alps. The warm and classic design of a luxurious car on the Orient Express shields the passenger from the cold outside. An Art Nouveau carpet leads the viewer's eye up to the secluded upper compartment. Resting on the side, a silver cup...

Bistro du Midi, Oil Painting
By Onelio Marrero
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
In his distinct style of impressionism, artist Onelio Marrero displays a man in a suit reading the news as he sits by an empty dining hall. He bases the piece on sketches of a Back Bay, Boston restaurant named Bistro du Midi. He creates a narrative of an imaginary proprietor perusing a newspaper before the establishment opens and the clients fill the place. Onelio gives the viewer a sense of the décor and light streaming through the windows - beyond it, a hint of the Boston Public Garden.

About the Artist
Artist Onelio Marrero paints impressionist city scenes of everyday life. He captures the romanticism of New York City, from the picturesque fountains in Central Park to a glistening city street on a rainy afternoon. He creates a sense of nostalgia and intimacy with his work, offering the feeling that you have visited this particular scene before. “Each play of light, each texture, and each movement of a figure can have a captivating effect on me,” says Onelio. He studied at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art where he mastered discerning color and values, giving his work a more spontaneous appearance. Onelio’s work is an appreciation for beauty in all of its greatest forms; nature, art, and people.

The Brooklyn Diner
Located in Fairfield, CT
After a long, successful career with the Eastman Kodak Company as a photojournalist and editorial photographer, Emile Dillon returned to painting in 1998. As a photographer he traveled the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe. While he’d chosen the camera for his profession, he’d grown up with oil on canvas. His grandfather was the Harlem Renaissance painter Frank Joseph Dillon and a favorite uncle was the Latin American artist Felix Vargas. Dillon’s years behind the camera and days in Soho galleries inspired him to pursue Photorealism as a style. But instead of the landscape of the exotic which he’d experienced in his Kodak travels, he was fascinated by the humble diners, motels, and vintage signs which were vanishing from American towns and cities. To perfect his craft, he studied at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York. In an article on his work in the July 2019 issue of American Art Collector magazine, Dillon comments on his subject matter. “Somebody’s got to save these things…These places may not exist anymore in the next 100 years.” Dillon’s favorite painting in this exhibition is Dunkin Donuts...
